Candied ginger
Made with sliced ginger as part of our cordial process, our candied ginger is a tasty (spicy) snack, and great in baked goods. The slices are cooked in syrup, then pressed, rolled in sugar and dried - so they're sweet, spicy ginger "chips". A portable way to have ginger with you for digestive issues, or chop them up and add to our ginger scone recipe (along with some St. Steve's ginger cordial)! These are not like the crystallized ginger you find in the grocery store, which is more sugar than ginger - they start sweet and then hit you with ginger heat.
candied hazelnuts
Did you know we grow hazelnuts on our farm? We do! These are hybrid hazelnuts from Badgersett Farm in Minnesota, and we planted them over 20 years ago as 3-month old seedlings with the nut still attached (awwww...). In the meantime, they've grown, and are now large bushes - each one is different, which translates to "not ideal for machine harvest" in farm-speak. We hand-harvest them, dry them in one of our greenhouses, and then begin the long process of de-husking, cracking the shells, and separating out the nutmeats. For many years we struggled to figure out what to do with the nuts that would be viable given the amount of labor required. Now, we finally have two products - our hazelnut cordial and these candied hazelnuts. We love to use the nuts as a topper for oatmeal, add them to cookies or baked goods, or just as a snack! Our candied hazelnuts are lightly candied - not coated with a sugary coating, so don't expect them to be as sweet as those cinnamon candied nuts you get at the fair. Do be careful, though - we are very careful, but can't rule out the occasional shell fragment.
Steve's Novel
Maybe you didn't know how creative Steve is? Well, let us tell you about this novel he wrote! It's what we affectionately call "historical science fiction" - historical fiction with some cool stuff mixed in for fun, and a great middle-grade level coming of age story, set in Wales in the 1300s.
